Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay was born on August 24, 1972, at Long Beach California. DuVernay was encouraged by her aunt Denise as an infant. She was night nurses to afford her aunt the time she needed throughout the day to indulge in the passion of literature, art as well as theatre. DuVernay fell in love with the 1961 film West Side Story after her aunt recommended it to DuVernay. DuVernay discovered by watching her mother's examples of the power of art as an instrument for activism. Her mother was also a the social sensitivity and taught DuVernay how to communicate through the medium of art. DuVernay was a resident of Compton throughout her life, but was able to spend summers with the extended family of her father located in Lowndes County Alabama. DuVernay's Dad recalled seeing the civil rights march of the past along the Edmund Pettus Bridge near the town of Selma Alabama. The time spent in Selma, Alabama during the summer, would later inspire her to write a script for a film based on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the Civil Rights Movement. DuVernay was awarded her graduation certificate at Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. In the year 1990, she graduated from the Saint Joseph High School located in Lakewood California. DuVernay developed an interest in broadcast journalism as a student. As an intern, she worked for CBS News at the time of O.J. Simpson's trial. DuVernay recalls being tasked to observe the house of one member of the jury, and then examine their junk. The work she was assigned to did not leave her satisfied with journalism so she decided to move towards the industry of public relations. DuVernay began her professional career as a junior assistant to publicity for a film studio that was small shortly after she graduated from the college. Her first venture was The DuVernay Agency, her company for public relations in 1999. Her agency launched numerous promotional and lifestyle networks which include Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
